CALL TO KOREA

The first part of July 1950, a combat review was held by 1^st Marine Division units at Camp Pendleton, California. It was after this combat review that the word went out that General MacArthur had requested the Marines be sent to Korea and President Truman issued the order. What happened after that, was put on a fast track and the First Provisional Marine Brigade was formed and set sail for South Korea. I was a Sergeant and communicator and was a part of that Brigade, 1st Bn. 5th Marines. Prior to this time most of my duties had been with non-FMF units. I had a lot to learn in such a short time.

War is never pretty and in the words of David Douglas Duncan who covered the Marines from the onset, "This is War". The scenes that follow are only a part of the action that went on as the Marines went from San Diego to Pusan, South Korea. Battles in the south along the Pusan Perimeter, Naktong bulge, Inchon, Seoul, Wonsan, Koto-ri, Hagaru-ri, Yudam-ni, Chosin and back. This was an action filled time for the Marines and other units in Korea. The Marines performed in a manner that was a credit to the Corps and to the Country.
