RETURN TO CHOSIN

The Chosin Reservoir was the site of the most dramatic episode of the Korean War. It was November and December 1950, that 5th and 7th Marines encounter the full force of several Chinese Army Divisions with orders to completely destroy the Marines. The Marines along with units of the U.S. Army made history in this far off place in North Korea. But they would go on to fight another day. One would have to be there to really understand it. The photos below show images in contrast, unfortunately the men there would only know the first one, the latter one is the image you would see today.

Chosin Reservoir - Winter 1950 - as seen from the air. Please note, this was not the view of the 5th and 7th Marines and certain other allied units. Needless to say their view was on the ground.

Chosin Reservoir - September 2001

This picture of the Chosin Reservoir was taken in September 2001 by a member of the Remains Recovery team based in Hawaii. It was contributed by SGT Dan Seymour, a member of the team. It seems unreal that this serene and beautiful place could have been the scene of one of the most intense battles in U. S. Military History.

On a recent recovery mission to the Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir, the remains of 14 American service members were recovered. The Reservoir appeared on Japanese maps as Chosin and was called Changjin by Koreans.
